'This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested His glory. And His disciples believed in Him.'
-John 2:5
In John 2:1-11, Jesus performed his first miracle at a wedding in Cana by turning large jars of water into the best wine after the party ran out, saving the hosts from embarrassment. Attended by Jesus, Mary, and the disciples, this miracle showed his glory and caused his followers to believe in him.
In Cana Class we are kind, we are respectful, we are safe and we are ready.

All of our children are striving to be the best that they can be. However these children have been acknowledged for following the example of Jesus Christ. Amongst other qualities they have shown kindness, perseverance, respect and love for others. Here they are with Vinnie the bear, part of our ‘Mini Vinnie’ team.
February
What a busy Spring 1! The children have thoroughly enjoyed learning all about Beatrix Potter in our English non-fiction unit and they now know some very interesting facts about the famous children’s author. In maths we have used our growing number knowledge to help us begin to tackle multiplication questions, using skip counting and repeat additions. In PE the children have continued to focus on their fundamental ball skills and gymnastics (balancing, jumping, travelling). As you can see from the pictures, they have done extremely well at relaxing after building up a sweat! In RE the children have loved hearing and sharing the stories from the Gospel of Luke, they have seen how meeting Jesus changed the lives of so many people and thought about how little things we do, in Jesus’ footsteps can make a big difference to other people.
January 2026
In RE the children have been learning about Jesus from Galilee to Jerusalem. They have heard about how Jesus was ‘presented’ at the temple in Jerusalem when he was 40 days old. We thought about how people who had the opportunity to meet the Son of God. We heard that an old man named Simeon proclaimed that Jesus was the ‘light of the world’ and we thought about how we too can bring light to the world. We also enjoyed experiencing how Candlemas is celebrated by Christian’s across the world. In France they enjoy crepes, in South American countries they enjoy bright, loud and happy festivals and in Luxembourg people enjoy a ‘Festival of Children’. We were very excited to reenact Candlemas Lee rations from across the world.
December 2025
This has been a very busy time for the children. Throughout the season of Advent our children have thought about the true meaning of Christmas. Not only have they continued to try hard with their learning, but they have also enjoyed lots of lovely festive activities such as the ‘Santa Dash’, the Advent craft afternoon, visiting our elderly friends in the nursing home, taking part in two nativity performances, riding a Christmas donkey, dancing our socks off at our Christmas party (and learning the moves to the Macarena, Cha Cha slide, Saturday Night, Superman and the Music Man thanks to Mrs Cross and Mrs English) and saying goodbye to the lovely Mrs Ashworth.
November 2025
This week we have been working hard on our maths. We have been thinking about addition fact families. This was a little tricky at first but with lots of hard work we got there. We have also been looking at number bonds to ten, we love maths so much that we even used our developing knowledge of number bonds to make Christmas paper chain decorations. In RE we have been thinking about how at Christmas time we celebrate God giving the world the greatest gift- His Son, Jesus. We have learnt about the Annunciation, which is when the Angel Gabriel visited Mary with a special message from God. In DT we learnt about different mechanisms and how things move. We made our very own phonics matching game.
It has been lovely to see the children back in school after the half term break. The children have been working hard once again. In maths the children have been using part whole models to help them understand addition. They have even been writing their own number sentences. The children thought about what God means to them and how God holds us all in His hands. There has also been lots of singing this week, as we continue to prepare ourselves for the season of Advent, to think about the Christmas story and learn our nativity songs.
October 2025
The children worked so hard on their masterpieces as part of our ‘Pumpkin Parade’.
As part of the St Mary’s family we understand how God wants us to care for others. To show how we can care for other members of our community we visited a local nursing home, where we enjoyed spending time with some older people. We showed consideration and respect when speaking with the lovely residents at the nursing home.
This week the children have continued to learn about their five senses. This week we focused on taste and smell. The children taste tested lots of different foods and tried to describe how they tasted. The children tried dark chocolate, white chocolate, strawberries, salted crisps, sour sweets and lemon. The favourite taste was the sweet white chocolate, closely followed by the bitter dark chocolate. Only one child, Lailah and Mrs Cross chose the sour lemon as their favourite taste. The children then had to smell different pots to see if they could recognise the scent. They smelt garlic, coffee, vanilla, mint, perfume, cinnamon and lemon. Most of the children were able to identify the garlic, coffee and mint and they had some interesting suggestions for the cinnamon including ‘spicy Christmas cake’, ‘biscoff’ and ‘gingerbread men’. These science investigations were so much fun! In maths the children have been using greater than, less than and equal to language and symbols to compare numbers. They even pretended to be a greedy crocodile who would only wants eat the greatest numbers. In English we have been looking at the Ning Nang Nong poem by Spike Milligan. The children chose there favourite line and gave reasons for their choices and they even formed their own band to find the beat of the poem.
In RE the children wrote their own acrostic prayers to tell God what they are thankful for. The children loved hearing what their friends are thankful for and we heard some beautiful answers. The children said that they are thankful for their families, their friends, their St Mary’s family and their pets. Some of the children were thankful for electricity and food. And some of the children said that they are thankful for eyesight, hearing, hospitals, doctors, teachers and emergency services. All the children agreed that they were thankful for our beautiful world and the wonderful things God has given us.
September 2025
This week the children have been learning all about the human and physical features of their local area. They now understand that a human feature is a landmark or building that was made by man. Physical features are the landmarks which are natural such as the sea, beach, weather or area of woodland. We were then able to use ‘junk’ to build our own Fleetwood human features. The children planned their models and worked very hard. They built an Asda, Memorial Gardens, a lighthouse, their own home, Freeport and a Highbury Stadium amongst many others. The children have also been putting a great deal of effort into their handwriting. They are making lots of progress and making Mrs Cross very happy. Steve and Harold the giraffe also visited the class, the children learnt all about the importance of eating five pieces of fruit and vegetables each day. They learnt about how this can help to keep their bodies and brains healthy.
Cana Class were thrilled to be visited by a lovely lady who shared beautiful bible stories and lovely songs with them. They children thoroughly enjoyed listening to the word of God through song and picture.
In maths the children have worked hard to secure their knowledge of one more and one less and moved on to comparing groups of objects by matching. In science they have continued to think about their five senses and in particular their sense of hearing and their sense of sight. We completed an experiment to discover how distance can change the volume at which hear certain sounds and we carried out an investigation to find out what it might feel like to have no sight. In English the children have been writing about how ‘super duper’ they are and what makes them unique. At the start of the week our class was asked to perform a poem or song during our whole school celebration assembly! As the children have been learning all about God’s awe inspiring gift of creation and how we can help care for God’s beautiful world chose to perform a jolly song all about God’s creation of the world, complete with actions. This song has been a lot of fun to learn and rehearse. The children performed their song during our assembly. They were very courageous and absolutely fantastic.
In science we went on a ‘senses hunt’ around school. The children thought about everything they could see, hear, feel and smell around our lovely school. They were surprised at how many different sounds we heard. In English the children have been working really hard to hold a sentence and accurately write our sentences in our best handwriting with capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. In maths the children have continued their work on place value including one more and one less than a given number. This has been a little tricky but the children have tried very hard and shown determination and perseverance. Finally in RE the children have continued to learn about creation and have particularly enjoyed studying various pieces of art that show the creation. It was wonderful to hear their thoughts and understanding of the different examples.
Monday 15th September- Friday 19th September
What have we learnt this week?
The children have been working hard on their sentence writing skills. They are remembering to include capital letters, full stops and to separate their words with finger spaces. They have also impressed us with their growing vocabulary. In maths the children have continued to think about place value by counting from a larger quantity and using different objects to represent numbers. In Science the children have identified the differences between humans and animal body parts and started to think about their five amazing senses. In our RE lessons the children are still learning about creation and have enjoyed discussing the Lords Prayer and the Nicene Creed. They were particularly excited to think about all the ‘invisible’ things that God created. The children made some wonderful suggestions such as hope, happiness, joy and memories.
Monday 8th September- Friday 12th September
Our first full week back at school and the children have worked their socks off! In maths the children have been using practical resources to help them understand place value. In English we have read ‘Our Class Family’ and spoke about all of the qualities our class family recipe would need. The children were able to suggest some fabulous qualities such as patience, thoughtfulness and honesty. The children then wrote some wonderful sentences to describe our class family. In RE we have started to learn about how God created the world and think about all of the things in our lives that we can be thankful for. The children have really enjoyed PE and not only have they started to work on their ‘rolling’ skills in gymnastics, they have also practised their hopping, jumping and underarm skills. Finally in science, the children have started to learn about the human body. We were amazed at the number of body parts they could name!
As we start the new school year, the children have been busy settling back into school life. They were all very excited to see each other after the long summer holiday. It has been an absolute joy to get to know the new members of the class and wonderful to welcome back the familiar faces. The children have completed lot's of 'about me' activities, produced some eye catching art, done some lovely writing and had so much fun together. We even had time to fit in some phonics!
This will be your child’s learning environment for the next year. We can’t wait to help them grow and learn.
